Lots going on this week in the hobby. Topps Chrome baseball, aka "the big one," the 30th anniversary edition drops today. The trade deadline hits July 31 — big news and exciting times for all teams that look to retool or rebuild. And The National opens in Rosemont on the 29th, where 600+ dealers will spend five days telling each other the market's never been hotter. I will be watching all of it from my couch, but hope to make it to the seminal event in the hobby sometime in the next few years.

Somewhere in between, I bought into my first case break on X/Twitter with Grand Salami — five cases of 2026 Topps Finest, pick-your-player. More on that below, because I have thoughts (and three Braves).

I found Grand Salami on X and ended up watching their live break on YouTube — a five-case 2026 Topps Finest hobby break, pick-your-player format. They're three former college ballplayers out of the Seattle/Portland area, and it shows: the commentary is actual baseball talk, not just a guy reading serial numbers into a ring light.

Finest is a fun product to watch break right now — two autos per hobby box and a brand-new Super Rare base tier that's hobby-exclusive, which means every pack has a reason to matter (Beckett). They also run a pre-grading service called Grand Salami Subs, which — after PSA closed the cheap submission window — is exactly the kind of pre-screen step I'd want before paying today's grading prices.

My picks in the break: Chris Sale, Michael Harris II, and Drake Baldwin. One future Hall of Fame lefty, one Gold Glove center fielder, and the young catcher I've been quietly stacking all year. If you're going to gamble on cardboard, gamble on laundry you love.

Here's the quirk that makes Caglianone interesting: he debuted in June 2025, after Topps locked its 2025 checklists. So the two-way monster from Florida carries his entire official rookie-card class into 2026 products — and his flagship RC is 2026 Topps Series 1 #138 (Yahoo Sports).

The bat has always been loud — as a rookie last July he cleared three walls in center at Kauffman with a 466-foot shot, the longest by a Royals rookie in the Statcast era. But 2026 is when the profile matured: an eight-game June stretch at a .538 clip pushed his OPS over .800, backed by a 17.6% barrel rate and a 54.9% hard-hit rate (Athlon, June 2026). His Series 1 autos have moved from roughly $120 to $175 since May — a 45% climb while most flagship base has been cooling (Athlon market tracking).

The thesis writes itself: his first Topps Chrome rookie card arrives Wednesday, and Topps is treating him as a headliner — he anchors the RC class alongside Konnor Griffin and Roman Anthony and features in the Radiating Rookies insert (Topps Ripped). Chrome is the version the hobby actually prices rookies on — refractors, numbered parallels, the whole ladder. If Chrome hype does what Chrome hype does, the Series 1 flagship RC and its parallels look like the value entry right now, not after.

The honest caveat, because that's the brand: the strikeout rate is ugly — bottom-tier in the league — and it's the one thing that could stall this. The barrel metrics say breakout; the whiffs say wait. I lean breakout.
